The only desert in Britain, which houses a nature reserve and a power station, is up for sale for Dh8.55 million (£1.5 million), local British newspapers reported.

Dungeness Estate, which has been in the hands of a family trust since it was established in 1964, has been put up for sale, ‘The Guardian’’ reported, with the hope that new owners could “breathe new life” into the barren spit of land on the south Kent coast.

The 468-acre barren area is one of the UK’s iconic landmarks and an unlikely tourist hotspot that attracts one million visitors every year.

"It is a too early to say whether Middle East investors will opt to buy such a property, but we do know that they are buyers who are looking at buying trophy assets in the UK,” a senior executive with a top international consultancy told Emirates 24|7 on condition of anonymity.

A report by CBRE, a global property expert, disclosed that $14 billion was invested in overseas property markets by Middle East investors in 2014 with 32 per cent of Middle East investment finding its way into the UK capital.

Put on the market by Strutt and Parker property agents, the sale includes 22 properties that are mostly converted railway cottages that are subject to 99-year leases, but does not include the power station, pub, lighthouses and narrow-gauge railway, local media reported.

“The estate has been in a family trust for many years and it is with some sadness that the trustees have decided it is time to sell,” Maurice Ede, one of the trustees, told ‘The Guardian’.

He added that he felt “now is the right time to pass it on to someone who can breathe new life into Dungeness.”

The property generates an annual income of more than £130,000 from ground rents of long-term residential leasehold properties, commercial fishing agreements, etc.
